Ways to Give
FOUNDED THROUGH VISION AND GENEROSITY
Maine Coast Waldorf School was founded in 1984 by a small group of parents and educators who had a vision to bring Waldorf education to southern Maine. Since then, the school has grown from a half day kindergarten class in rented space, to an 80 acre campus offering full day programs to 295 students from early childhood through Grade 12. Today’s donors are inspired by the founding members, fully committed to the school’s mission and vision, and motivated by the beneficial impact of their gifts. We are grateful for our diverse, generous and engaged donor community who provide tremendous support to the school and the children it serves.
SUPPORTING THE WHOLE COMMUNITY: MAINE COAST WALDORF FUND
Maine Coast Waldorf School strives to remain accessible to all families who are committed to pursuing a Waldorf education, regardless of their economic circumstances. Like most independent schools, we cannot rely solely on tuition to meet our operating budget; the cost of a Maine Coast education would be out of reach for many families if we did. To keep costs down while advancing our goals for excellence in teaching, facilities, and educational opportunities, we encourage Maine Coast families to make a tax-deductible annual gift —of any amount—appropriate to their circumstances. These important contributions give our school stability and support an admissions policy that reflects our ideals, while moving us toward a goal of 100% participation. There are a variety of ways to participate.
SECURING OUR FUTURE: ENLARGING OUR ENDOWMENT FUND THROUGH PLANNED GIVING
The Endowment Fund:
Maine Coast Waldorf School established an Endowment Fund in 2001 and it has grown steadily ever since; significantly enlarging it is now one of the school’s top strategic priorities. A larger Endowment Fund will provide much-needed annual revenue while simultaneously building a strong financial base for the school’s future, helping to secure the legacy and sustainability of the school for decades to come.
To meet the needs of an inclusive community, it is critical that we keep tuition levels affordable, provide Tiered Tuition support to all families who qualify, attract and support the very best faculty, and maintain high quality Waldorf programs. Enlarging our Endowment Fund is the best way to accomplish these goals.
Planned Giving Program: Making a "Forever Gift"
Planned gifts can provide much needed revenue into the future without impacting your family’s current income or financial security. Maine Coast Waldorf School accepts the following planned gifts:
- Retirement Accounts: name MCWS as a beneficiary for all or a portion of your IRA, pension, or other retire accounts.
- Bequests: through estate planning, make MCWS a beneficiary for all or a potion of your will or trust.
- Gifts of Tangible Property: donate real estate, appreciated securities, or personal assets now or through estate planning.
- Giving through Trusts: set up a Revocable Living Trust, Charitable Remainder Trust or Charitable Lead Trust to benefit MCWS.
- Gifts of Life Insurance Policies: name MCWS as a beneficiary or your life insurance policy.
Speak to your legal, tax or financial advisor if you are considering a planned gift – they can advise you about the tax advantages and the most beneficial form and timing.
If you have already made provisions for MCWS in your will or trust, or you would like to talk further about a planned gift, contact the Development Office: 207-865-3900 Ext. 116 or [email protected]
Maine Coast Waldorf School initiates major fundraising campaigns to serve the needs of the future, investing in buildings, campus improvements, and program expansion. The extremely successful 2016-17 One Campaign raised $4.3 million for a number of capital investments: constructing a high school building on the Desert Road campus, Community Hall additions, an Educational Support Center, and improved outdoor spaces. Past campaigns, between 1995 and 2011, raised over $4 million for new, energy efficient and environmentally sustainable buildings: two classroom buildings, an early childhood center, a community hall, and a handcraft building, as well as funding for new programs and land purchases.
This annual event, held in early November, celebrates the season with fine crafts, music, food, puppetry and entertainment for the entire family, and raises funds to support our annual operations. The public is warmly invited to attend; Admissions staff are available that day to talk to prospective families.
Tiered Tuition Auction
The annual spring Tiered Tuition fundraiser enlists the support of not only Maine Coast Waldorf parents but also the greater Freeport community. The proceeds support the annual Tiered Tuition budget and the endowment fund.
Every summer since 2005, Maine Coast Waldorf School has hosted on our campus Circus Smirkus’ Big Top Tour, an internationally acclaimed youth circus. The proceeds support our movement, operating, and tiered tuition programs.
