Nowell '13

Nowell's reflections on senior year offer a glimpse into how the Maine Coast Waldorf experience carries forward:

"During my senior year at MCWS, reading Faust and discussing the nature of evil and temptation, or studying the transcendentalists and their reflections on nature and solitude, really opened up my mind to big questions." That same year, the Optics and Chaos Theory blocks lit a spark for science. “Those blocks made me see the beauty in everyday phenomena and understand how scientific revolutions happen. They definitely inspired my love of physics.”

Today, Nowell works as a Junior Sustainability Analyst at EarthShift Global, a Maine-based company helping organizations understand and reduce their environmental impacts.

“My work is a mix of analysis and research,” he explained. “I model environmental impacts from raw materials through end-of-life, and partner with academic and government groups. I love the puzzle of the technical work—and it feels good to know the problems I’m solving have a positive impact.”

Quinn '19

When Quinn reflects on her journey, it’s clear that the seeds planted at Maine Coast Waldorf School have flourished in remarkable ways. Quinn credits MCWS as the place “where I met myself”—a place that helped her build the courage to speak up and connect meaningfully with others.

"When I think back to my time at MCWS, what stands out the most isn’t one moment—it's the slow, steady growth that shaped who I am. I arrived soft-spoken and unsure, but over four years, something shifted. Through close friendships, long runs with the cross-country team, and the creative space to be curious, I started to feel at home in myself. MCWS wasn’t just where I went to school—it was where I learned how to move through the world with purpose."

"That sense of purpose deepened during my senior project, when I earned my Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) license and got my first glimpse into the world of medicine. I went on to study Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder, graduating in 2023." Quinn now serves as an EMT with DispatchHealth in Denver, providing in-home medical care to patients, particularly in communities that experience barriers to accessing traditional healthcare. The steady transformation that began at Maine Coast Waldorf School continues to shape Quinn's lasting impact in this fast-paced, challenging role.

Quinn’s artistry and entrepreneurial spirit are reflected in a small jewelry business where thoughtfully handcrafted pieces "carry stories from place to place". Quinn shared "My pieces are inspired by the vibrant colors of my travels—from the soft cherry blossoms of Japan to the sun-washed tones of India. I often source stones and materials directly from local markets as I travel. Jewelry, for me, is another kind of healing. It’s another way to connect, letting each piece carry a story of place and connection."

Joe '14

Now a court-appointed public defense attorney based in Portland, Joe brings a strong sense of service and intellectual curiosity to his work—qualities that trace their roots back to his time at Maine Coast Waldorf School. “Coming from MCWS, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to study in college because I had such a diverse set of experiences and interests in high school,” he reflects. That rich academic and creative exposure led him to explore a wide range of college courses—from microbiology to theater to political science.

The latter sparked his passion, eventually shaping a path that led to a bachelor’s degree in American Politics and Civil Discourse from Hampshire College, followed by advanced degrees in both business and law from the University of Maine in 2024.

Joe’s academic success is not surprising to those familiar with Waldorf education. “Seminar-style college classes closely resembled my classes at MCWS,” he explains. “That made the transition to college much smoother than it was for some of my peers.” The school’s emphasis on dialogue, inquiry, and interdisciplinary learning provided Joe with the confidence and skills to navigate new ideas and perspectives with clarity and purpose.

Through practicing law, Joe brings the spirit of connection, resilience, and critical thinking—cultivated during his early years here—into the courtroom. Joe represents some of Maine’s most vulnerable citizens, guided by the compassion and community-mindedness nurtured during his Waldorf experience.
