Grade 12 Play
May 30 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Open Dress Rehearsal of the Class of 2017’s performance of Ketti Frings’ “Look Homeward, Angel.”
For their last artistic collaboration before they graduate, the Maine Coast Waldorf High School Class of 2017 is busily preparing their production of Look Homeward, Angel, based on Thomas Wolfe’s classic coming-of-age novel. Performances will be Tuesday evening, May 30 (an open dress rehearsal), followed by a school performance on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m., and two final performances on Thursday/Friday, June 1/2. All evening performances will begin at 7 p.m., with a $5 suggested donation.
The Pulitzer-Prize-winning play, by Ketti Frings, is an intense and gritty story of the Gant family. W.O., the stone carver father, has turned to alcohol to numb the pain of a long and bitter marriage to Eliza, matriarch and acquisitive powerhouse, who runs a boardinghouse with an assortment of eccentric characters. She is at odds with most of her children: Helen, who rivals her mother as a “workaholic”; Ben, a hack journalist battling health problems and a deep-seated resentment of his mother’s manipulations; Luke, who has managed to escape the general toxicity of the family dynamic by joining the armed services; and Eugene, at seventeen the youngest and perhaps most promising of the clan. Eugene’s struggle to free himself from the domination of his mother through a romantic liaison with one of the boarders forms the central focus of the play.
Because of the mature themes, sometimes raw language and occasional violent outbursts, parents might find the play’s general intensity inappropriate for children under 12.
