Strategic Plan

A Roadmap to the Future

With the children at the heart of all we do, the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan serves as a roadmap to evaluate, modify and strengthen the school's capacity, governance, and pedagogy (with Waldorf as our True North). It identifies the school’s current strengths and assets, opportunities for improvement, and critical priorities for future initiatives. It also reflects our commitment to maintaining the school’s viability in the near future and long-term, and supports strengthening of programs and overall school infrastructure.

History

In 2024 Maine Coast Waldorf School celebrated 40 years as an independent Waldorf school that now serves over 250 students from early childhood through high school. It also marked 30 years since arriving to the 75-acre Desert Road campus, situated on unceded Abenaki and Wabanaki land in Freeport, Maine. In 2024, the school also embarked on a new strategic plan, bringing together faculty, staff, board members, alumni, and current families. The latest round of planning began from the previous plan and current state of its goals, carrying forward similar themes with updates for the current context and adding new priorities that reflect the school’s current moment and vision for the future.

The faculty, staff, and board members on the Strategic Planning Committee shepherded an inclusive and thoughtful process that valued the relationships and inputs of the wider community, ultimately distilling this work into the clear goals and objectives that will drive Maine Coast Waldorf School into the next decade.

Mission, Vision & Values

The cornerstone of the 2025-2029 Strategic Plan is a statement of our mission, vision, and core values. These reflect the heart of who we are and the aspirations that unite us. They guide our operations, communications, and relationships within the school community and externally. They embody the ethos of Maine Coast Waldorf School. The work of all aspects of the Strategic Plan will be aligned with these guiding principles.

Waldorf as True North

Maine Coast Waldorf School embodies the core principles of Waldorf education and lives them out in a way unique to our place and community.

Goals

Governance

Our organizational structure and decision-making processes are effective and accessible to all faculty, staff, parents, and volunteers.

Governance is provided by three groups—the College of Teachers, the Board of Directors, and the Parent Association—working collaboratively with one another. The governance of Maine Coast Waldorf School is dynamic, tailored to each individual branch of the school (Early Childhood, Lower School, and High School) based on the specific services provided, capacity, and compliance requirements. The unfolding of the Waldorf educational experience holds children at the center at all times.

Goals

Capacity

The school’s financial, physical, and staffing capacity are robust and sustainable so MCWS is well positioned for the future.

Capacity relates to financial state, physical structures and campus, enrollment and retention, and staff and faculty. This pillar addresses the question, “What is the ideal capacity of the school—from a staffing, facilities, and financial perspective—that allows Maine Coast Waldorf School to fulfill its mission and be sustainable into the future?”
