Call for Art: Maine Coast Kraken

Entries Close October 20, 2026

Maine Coast Waldorf School invites students, alum, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of the MCWS community to submit original artwork imagining the Kraken, our school mascot.

Our goal is to find an image—or perhaps several images—that can help establish the Kraken's visual identity across athletics, school spirit, apparel, signage, and community traditions. We aren't necessarily looking for a conventional mascot logo. We are looking first for art: something imaginative, distinctive, beautiful, spirited, and unmistakably ours.

Please use the form below to upload your artwork and submit your entry.

Contest Details & Submission Requirements

Creative Brief

The Kraken comes to us from the cold waters and maritime mythology of the North Atlantic—a mysterious, powerful creature of the deep. Rooted in Scandinavian seafaring lore, it feels at home here on the Maine coast: wild, resilient, a little unconventional, and deeply connected to the natural world. It is fierce without needing to be aggressive; ancient and mythical rather than literal; and rich with possibilities for artists and storytellers. It’s time to discover what our Kraken looks like!

The Kraken might be fierce, mysterious, playful, elegant, ancient, wild, or somewhere in between. It could emerge from waves, exist simply as a beautifully drawn creature, or take a form none of us has imagined yet.

Our Kraken should feel spirited, strong, distinctive, connected to the coast, imaginative, enduring, and unmistakably MCWS. Please don’t feel constrained by what a traditional school mascot or sports logo is “supposed” to look like.

Submissions might be an illustration, drawing, painting, print, graphic design, hand-lettered image, digital artwork, or another two-dimensional medium that can ultimately be reproduced.

All artwork must be original and created by the submitting artist. AI-generated artwork is not eligible. Digital tools are welcome, but the creative work must be the artist's own.
