The middle school cross-country team wrapped up its 2021 season on 10/21 at Twin Brook in Cumberland. It was a rather crazy day of sun/clouds/showers/rainbows making it a challenge for assessing proper attire.
After a surprise shift in scheduling, the girls team of seven went off at 3:30. Rahel Delaney (surprise, surprise) took first place overall with an 11 second gap. Murreal Wilmot and Pepper Robillard managed the course nicely together, resulting in top 25 finishes. Kayla McGuire and Ellen Bloch also chose to stick it out together just ahead of Mars Charette, all nabbing top 50 positions and a 5th place finish out of twelve scoring teams.
In the second race of the day, the boys team of seven ran into a couple of teams that had caused them heartburn over the season. Soren Stark-Chessa took the lead for the boys with Ian Guzman on his elbow to land them both top ten positions. Charles Reynolds was right on their heels, followed shortly by the tag team of Eli Sidhu and Tadgh Lake. Fionn Mattson and Cam Veitch rounded out the day for the boys and secured them a 2nd place finish in a field of twelve scoring teams – this coach believes it is a team best at the CCC Invitational!
The grand finale came with our 3rd of the day in the coed race. Darwin Bouteria appeared to have been shot out of a cannon, roaring up the field at the start of the race and holding on for the two miles and a 2nd place finish. Angus Buck, Sam Willard, and Oliver Newton packed up and cruised the course in top 15 positions. Ben Sidhu and Kaeden Guddeck did the same just leading the twosome of Pippa Wilson and Tess Welch. Luke Cline managed the course solo and at the same time decimating his season PR. Running to the crowd cheer of “OFA all the way!,” Oliver Finn Audley also nailed his best time of the season. Closing it out for the coed team’s 3rd place finish was Maddie Huntington, giving it her all and making us proud in the process.
Great job by everyone and thanks to those of you who came to support the team! A season ending thank you to Lisa Mainella and Susan Sonntag who helped keep us on the rails (and trails) and, as always, my partner in crime, Dana Anderson without whom this would not happen. Cheers!
