MS Cross Country Off and Running

The middle school cross-country team got off to a slow start with back-to-back rainouts, but that all changed last week when the team managed two events. First, the Greeley Relays were held at Twin Brook in Cumberland as we ran a casual event with several teams of 5 runners tackling the one mile course. Then, on Thursday, we had our first official meet of the season at Pratt’s Brook in Yarmouth against teams from Cape Elizabeth, Lake Region, Old Orchard Beach and our hosts from Yarmouth. It was a great day for spectators, but a little hot for runners.

The girls went out first and our own Rahel Delaney crushed the course to win the race by more than a minute over the 2nd place finisher. Murreal Wilmot and Pepper Robillard ran shoulder-to-shoulder to fend off a slew of Yarmouth girls to capture 6th and 7th place, respectively. Kayla McGuire, just back from injury, powered through the course followed by Tess Welch and Ellen Bloch taking spots in the top 20. Pippa Wilson and Mars Charrette also cruised the trail to help take the girls’ team to a close second place finish just 4 points behind Cape. Great work!

Next up came the boys. A Maine Coast pack of 4 consisting of Ian Guzman, Eli Sidhu, Tadgh Lake, and Soren Stark-Chessa took 4th-7th places just ahead of Chesley Will and Angus Buck in 11th and 12th with Cam Veitch on their tail in 15th. Milo Emerson and Darwin Boutureira stuck it out together for a great run (and top 20 finishes) along with Leo Anderson, Sam Willard, Ben Sidhu, Kaeden Guddeck, Oliver Finn Audley, Luke Cline, and Caleb Oliver, many of whom were running their first MS career race. The boys took first place, 12 points ahead of Cape Elizabeth for our first team win of the season. Good work boys!

The team has a busy week this week as we travel to Sacopee Valley on Wednesday for a makeup meet and then on to the Scarborough Invitational at Smiling Hill on Friday. On Wednesday the girls run at 4:00, boys at 4:30. On Friday, the girls run at 4:15, the boys at 4:45. There is an award ceremony after the boys race, so please plan to stay for it if possible. Hope to see you all there!
