Last week the ski team traveled north to Titcomb Mountain in Farmington for the two day Class B Nordic State Championships. This year Classes A, B and C all skied together on the first day in the classic race, so it was an action packed venue with a large number of teams, large number of buses and cars, and almost 800 skis getting waxed before the skiers hit the course. Skiers set off at 15 second intervals and with so many skiers, it took over 35 minutes just to get all the skiers started in each race. Our coaches somehow (again!) hit the right combination of wax for the conditions and our skiers had solid races, though no top 10 performances were seen this first day.
We headed to our cozy cabin for a night of good food, camaraderie and well earned rest, then were back to Titcomb in the morning for the final race, a skate pursuit race where this time the skiers were divided by class. The pursuit format makes for exciting real time finishes, so an enthusiastic crowd cheered all the skiers in to the finish line. Everyone then moved to Mt. Blue High School for awards, which saw two of our skiers recognized for their top 10 finishes – both Emma Haims and Conrad Anderson finished 10th in their skate races. In team scoring, both the girls and the boys placed 5th.
Huge thanks to the many parents who came out to the races last week and cheered, took pictures, chaperoned, made food and generally held up the pep squad end of things. Also, grateful thanks to coach John Tarling and wax helpers John Attwood and Chuck Staples for again giving our skiers the best skis possible, not to mention making the waxing part look easy.
