Equity and Inclusion in the Grades: Seventh Grade Algebra

In seventh grade, the students have begun the study of Algebra, and no study of Algebra is complete without an understanding of its origins. The word algebra is from the Arabic al-jabr, which means “the reunion of broken parts.” The brilliant eighth century Persian mathematician Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi is considered the father of Algebra. At MCWS the seventh grade students have learned about al-Khwarizmi, they have drawn his portrait, and also learned how to write algebra in Arabic.
