On Wednesday, December 6th, our 8th graders were treated to an hour and a half circus skills workshop at Circus Maine on Thompson’s Point in Portland. The trip was organized by John Saccone and Mary Martin as part of the ongoing outreach stemming from Circus Smirkus.
Upon arriving at Circus Maine, the students were given an overview of the facility, followed by instruction in flexibility and stretching exercises from three Circus Maine coaches. The 8th graders were then divided into three groups to work in three areas: tumbling, aerial hoop (lyra), and aerial silk and acrobatics. The coaches in each of these areas focused on body awareness, strength, control, balance, flexibility, and power. The genuine interest the instructors have in young people and their enjoyment in teaching circus arts, was readily apparent in the individual instruction they gave to each of our students.
Many students mentioned how pleased they were to witness a group of professional circus performers practicing their art on a complex circus apparatus in an adjoining area. It was a truly inspiring afternoon!
Many thanks to Circus Maine for working with us and providing an open and caring environment for our students.
