Saturday was a big day at Twin Brook in Cumberland, with the Southern Regional Cross Country races taking place in all classes. This year Class C had the first races of the day, so under sunny skies (lovely for spectators but a bit warm for the runners), the girls kicked off the event. Twin Brook is legendary as a challenging course, so everyone knew they had their work cut out for them.
After a grueling 3.1 miles and in front of a very loud and enthusiastic crowd, Olivia Reynolds was the first to cross the finish line – congrats Olivia! The girls team placed second in Class C behind a very strong team from Maranacook, new to Class C this year. Maine Coast top 10 finishers were Olivia Reynolds (1), Olivia Skillings (3) and Mamie Whittier (9).
The boys were up next, and we’re happy to report that despite a couple injuries earlier in the week, everyone was in fighting shape by race time. There were many hotly contested battles in the final couple hundred yards, resulting in lots of exciting finishes! By the end, the boys team snagged top honors in Class C, with Nick Neveu (4), Matinicus Nevue (8) and Aiden Kusche (9) finishing in the top 10.
Both teams will be participating in the States races next Saturday, again at Twin Brook, with girls racing at 11:00 and boys at 11:35. Please come out to cheer on the team! Do note that there is no parking at Twin Brook itself. Parking is at Greely Elementary, Middle and High Schools, with bus rides provided to the race site.
