Maine Coast Waldorf High School Nordic Update

On Saturday the Nordic team headed west to Fryeburg for the Western Maine Conference Championship races. It was a cold day with light snow, so we brought out the dome tent and hunkered down for a long day. This is a two part championship event, with both a classic race and a skate race. Usually one race takes place during the week and the second race on Saturday. However, since the weekday component was cancelled, we had both races on Saturday. Two races in one day is not easy for the skiers, but everyone was up for the challenge.

In the first race (classic), Tucker Pierce came in first, followed by Nick Neveu(6), with Eli Gundersen, Thomas Kolle and Davis Ritger rounding out the top 20. On the girls side, Louise Ahearne was third, with Fiona Libby and Wilson Haims in the top 20. Moving onto the afternoon skate race, we saw Tucker in second, Nick (6), and Eli and Dylan in the top 20. In the girls skate race, Louise finished third and Fiona made it into the top 20 as well. The boys team came in second for the day and the girls placed fourth. Congratulations to Tucker as the Boys 2017 WMC Classical Champion and to all of our skiers on their excellent results.

Many thanks to so many parents for coming to the race and for bringing soup, bagels, hot chocolate, etc. It was great to have everyone there and the food was much appreciated by all.

Our remaining team competition this year is the Class C states races, taking place February 23 and 24 (during vacation week) at Quarry Rd in Waterville. This race venue is only an hour from Freeport, so we hope lots of spectators will come to the races to support the team. The schedule for these races will be posted on the blog once it is determined. There will still be ski practice this next week and over school vacation for all team members, so everyone should continue to check the team blog on a daily basis for info about races, practice times, locations and other details as they come up. The ski team blog is found at
