Thursday the 22nd brought the first day of fall but a last day of summer weather for our middle school races at Cape Elizabeth where we met up with Greely, St. Dominic’s, Waynflete, Jordan Small (Raymond), and our host team. This course can be a bit tricky with several transitions from narrow trail to open filed to trail transitions over a repeated mile loop.
The boys went out first with a goal of tightening up our running packs a bit from last week and they did just that. Matt Neveu led the way with a first place finish and a PR, followed by Louis Walker and John Miles Muentener all finishing in the top ten. Wes Teegarden and Bryan Stark-Chessa both had great races and a PR for Bryan. Conrad Anderson turned in another great performance this week with Oliver Perry (in his debut) and Benji Meza on his heels. Our team of eight managed to fend off some big teams in a field of 73 runners and came up only two points shy of Cape Elizabeth for a second place finish. Great job!
Our girls had the honors next, and did a great job of pulling their partners through the race. Nora Goldberg-Courtney and Mamie Whittier ran connected at the hip through the entire race and took fourth and fifth place, respectively, with Aniela Holtrop and Eliza Skillings woking together and picking up several spots at the finish. Isla Barmby rounded out our team score with a PR-worthy performance with almost a half minute improvement over last week. Dylan Randall-Newberg and Carly Blackburn did a great job, as did Lila Salter-Gurau, and Mahina Carlon. Evelyn Lukis, Ella Emery, and Emma Haims ran literally hand-in-hand through the finish line helping Ella to crush her prior best by nearly a minute. Like the boys before them, the girls pushed through a sea of maroon to take second place overall!
Our next race (following the Greely Relays on 9/26) will be the big Scarborough Invitational at Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook on Friday, 9/30 with teams from all over the state of Maine and a large field of runners. Please note that the times are slightly different for this day – the girls run first at 4:15 and the boys at 4:45. There is a brief awards ceremony following. Hope to see you there!
